One Life
James Hawes
During the ‘International Day of Non-Violence’, NW is showing One Life in collaboration with Vredeshuis Aalst. The film tells the inspiring, true story of Sir Nicholas Winton, through whose efforts on the eve of World War II more than 600 mainly Jewish children were saved from the hands of the Nazis. For years, he and several friends worked to bring the children safely to the UK, where they were mostly adopted by British families. Fifty years later, however, in 1988, Nicholas reproached himself for not doing enough to save all the children. It is only when the BBC programme ‘That’s Life!’ invites him to appear on their programme that something happens that makes him finally begin to come to terms with the guilt and grief he has carried with him for five decades.
Academy Award-winner Sir Anthony Hopkins (‘The Two Popes’, ‘The Father’) plays the role of the older Sir Nicholas Winton and Johnny Flynn (‘Emma’, ‘Beast’) plays the role of the younger Nicholas. The other lead roles are played by Helena Bonham Carter (‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘The King’s Speech’, ‘Sweeney Todd’) and Sir Jonathan Pryce (‘The Two Popes’, ‘The Wife’).
The screening will be preceded by an introduction by Stefaan Van den Abeele. Van den Abeele is a teacher and volunteer at the Peace House. In 2023, he won the Groene pluim as a leader of several climate actions, and initiatives in Aalst.
This event is part of Open Cinema. Between 29 September and 6 October, several cinemas and film exhibitors in Flanders surprise with their varied film offerings. During Open Cinema, NW applies a reduced rate of 6 euros per screening and on both days, film lovers can browse among NW’s poster offerings.
