The Unreliable Narrator: Jan Louies

Historical walk through Aalst

Jan Louies is an expert on the history and local dialect of Aalst. In response to SCI FI AGIT PROP, an exhibition of Tamás Kaszás organized by Netwerk Aalst, he has developed this short historical walk through the city.

The walk starts at Visual Aid, a work by Tamás Kaszás located in the small yard that separates the Stedelijk Museum (the municipal museum, red.) from the Sint-Martinuskerk (St. Martin’s Church, red.). Afterwards, Jan Louies leads you across the (former) island of Chipka towards the right bank of the city, where the walk concludes at Netwerk Aalst. Along the way, he points out places that narrate the turbulent social history of Aalst.

There are group tours with Jan Louies scheduled on 3 February at 2 pm and 4 pm, and on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 April each time at 2 pm. The meeting point is Netwerk Aalst. No need to make a reservation, just be on time.

Luc Geeroms, the conservator of the Municipal Museum, curated a small archive presentation as part of this walk and the SCI FI AGIT PROP project. This small presentation consists of a selection of archivalia on Pieter Daens, Louis Paul Boon and Frans Masereel.

The Unreliable Narrator is a set of alternative guided tours within the programme of Netwerk Aalst. Netwerk Aalst commissioned Jan Louies to develop this second tour, following the Brazilian writer and storyteller Luanda Casella.
