Vanessa Joan Müller
Unrelated is een langlopend project van Vanessa Joan Müller. Müller zal vervreemding bekijken als een hedendaagse toestand enerzijds en de staat waarin het hedendaagse verkeert anderzijds.
Unrelated is als het ware een achtergrondgeluid, een stem ergens in de ruimte van Netwerk Aalst waar de andere projecten in het kader van The Astronaut Metaphor plaatsvinden. Unrelated zal zich materialiseren tot een reeks teksten, interviews en gesprekken. Het kan een filmprogramma zijn of een tentoonstelling in de marge van de instelling, een podcast of een lijst van aanbevolen lezingen – allemaal samen zullen ze een aanvulling vormen op de thema’s die The Astronaut Metaphor aansnijdt.

Social distancing, de twee codewoorden tijdens de dagen, weken en maanden die gedomineerd worden door het coronavirus – uit elkaar blijven, fysiek contact vermijden. Van elkaar gescheiden zijn is het nieuwe sociaal. Niettemin vrezen velen dat ze vervreemd zullen raken doordat ze zoveel tijd doorbrengen in afzondering. Maar wat betekent “vervreemding” eigenlijk?

Alienation is nothing new: the concept as developed by Marx dates back to late nineteenth century and reflects how, in a capitalist mode of production, the worker is alienated from what he produces, from his labour, from his own historicity. Social distancing has created a particular form of unrelatedness, and alienation. What is it exactly that we are lacking now? We are in lack of community, in lack of others. We are in lack of reality, both physical and symbolic, feeling separated, alienated, privatised, reduced to the private sphere, locked in our homes. Todd Haynes’s masterpiece Safe from 1995 once again became a focus of film critics recently as it seems to resonate perfectly with the present COVID-19 pandemic. A film about illness and isolation, it also offers an incisive analysis of the USA’s middle class at the dawn of the neoliberal era.
