L’Huile Et Le Fer & Trouble Sleep

Two films explore the daily rituals and challenges of labour

L’Huile Et Le Fer
Pierre Schlesser
France – 2021 – 33′

In a small village in eastern France, the same gestures are repeated every day. Chopping wood, milking a cow, sewing a cloth, digging a vegetable out of the ground… So many actions repeated from generation to generation, from day to day, to the point of exhaustion. Through the figure of his father, the narrator recalls his childhood spent in this village and his relationship with a place where devotion to hard work is the daily life of the inhabitants.

Trouble Sleep
Alain Kassanda
France, Nigeria – 2021 – 40′

Fred, unemployed graduate like many young Nigerians, is starting a new job as a taxi driver. As for Akin, he taxes commercial vehicles for the national transport union. They both operate in the rich urban landscape of Ibadan, in which Alain Kassanda’s camera choreographs the multiplicity and perpetual power relations at play.
