In memoriam Founder & Chairman NW Guido Saey

1948-2024

NW is in full swing. The newly re-opened space now exudes a welcoming atmosphere, combining relevance with an effortless complexity. Not long ago, we raised our glasses to toast yet another promising fresh start. Little did we know that soon after, we would be bidding farewell to our kind, erudite, and ever-encouraging chairman.

It all began in the early 1980s as a daring dream, a bold initiative to shake up the cultural landscape of Aalst and show how it should be done. And it worked. Netwerk, that eclectic mix of individuals, grew into a distinctive, activist, and influential hub for culture and debate. The pioneers had tapped into the spirit of the times and went full throttle. Guido was one of them. Until just a few days ago, he was our steadfast anchor.

Guido, how do we say goodbye? Your presence was so natural, it almost went unnoticed—just as you preferred. It never had to be about you, though you never shied away from the spotlight. A brilliant conversationalist, erudite and well-read, a lover of good food and drink, a listener, advisor, and mediator—you were all these things. You loved people and the world around you. You also had a deep affection for this sometimes quirky city and its characters, whom you knew so well. Time and again, you guided NW through turbulent waters, always making space for fresh energy and new talent. With a smile and a twinkle in your eye, you listened to the wildest ideas. Sometimes concerned, but always confident. “Go ahead,” you’d say.

We will go ahead, Guido. We will keep Netwerk alive, keep it thriving. Because it remains as relevant today as it was when you first decided to make a difference in the industrial town of Aalst. You will always be a part of NW. It will always be yours. Rest in peace.

Guido meant a great deal to NW and to Aalst. That’s why the team invites his many friends and acquaintances to sign the memorial book at the reception, as a final farewell to Guido in the place that was so dear to him. You are welcome to do so during opening hours, until Saturday, September 7, the day of the funeral.
