Pedro Barateiro

Pedro Barateiro (Portugal, 1979) lives and works in Lisbon. He obtained an MA at the Malmö Art Academy in Sweden and at Maumaus in Lisbon. He further developed his practice in residencies at Air Antwerpen, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, ISCP in New York, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. His work pivots around the relation between artist and spectator. In the current context of late capitalism, a spectator can be seen as a consumer, whose perception has been influenced by feelings of desire and expectation, just like in a market context. With this underlying idea in mind, Barateiro deconstructs the thoughts and feelings that can be provoked by his own works.

Barateiro was one of the founding members of Parkour, an artist run space in Lisbon that existed from 2012 to 2014. Among his many collaborations he edited, with Ricardo Valentim, the books Temporary Collaborations and ACTIVITY. His work was been showed at REDCAT, Los Angeles; Kunsthalle Basel; MHKA, Antwerp; Museu Colecção Berardo, Lisbon; Museu de Arte Contemporâneade Serralves, Porto; Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge; 29th Bienal de São Paulo; 16th Sydney Biennale & 5th Berlin Biennale.
