Twenty years after their affair was widely covered in the tabloids, Gracie (Julianne Moore) and her husband Joe, who is 23 years her junior, prepare for their twins’ graduation party. However, family relationships come under strain when Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) arrives to study the couple for her new film role, in which she will portray Gracie. As the actress observes the family, her own ambitions and perceptions are revealed, leading to new insights about herself and the family.
