Apart from his feature films, Herzog is renowned for his documentary work, which often involved less complex productions, enabling him to create films without requiring massive budgets. One of his most notable documentaries is the thought-provoking “Grizzly Man,” which delves into the life and death of Timothy Treadwell, a man who spent years living among grizzly bears. The film raises profound questions about the human-nature relationship and the filmmaker’s role as both observer and participant. Treadwell’s story unfolds through the extensive hours of video footage he captured himself. Alone in the wilderness of Alaska, Treadwell found solace and connection with his camera and the bears, ultimately meeting a tragic fate.
The screening will be introduced by Tim Maerschand. Tim co-hosts the radio show “Kuleshov” on Urgent.fm and hosts the “Wide Angle” podcast for Film Fest Gent. He is actively involved as a volunteer with Ghent’s film collectives Ciné Rio and Kuru. Additionally, Tim frequently provides introductions and leads discussions at various venues in Bruges (Cinema Lumière), Deinze (Leietheater), and Ghent (KASKcinema, Ciné Mangiare, Sphinx Cinema). He has contributed to publications such as Filmmagie and Fantômas in the past.
