The Hours

Stephen Daldry

With Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman (Oscar Best Actress 2003)
US, 2003

Chronicles a day in the life of three women (played by Moore, Streep and Kidman in an Oscar-winning performance as famed author Virginia Woolf), all of whom share the feeling that they have been living their lives for someone else. Although they are separated by a span of nearly 80 years, they find themselves weathering similar crises.

An ode to Virginia Woolf with three characters connected to the novel ‘Mrs. Dalloway’. Kidman plays the role of Woolf, who is struck by depression while writing in the 1920s. Moore plays the role of housewife Laura, who feels disadvantaged by social norms in the 1950s and recognizes herself in Woolf’s work. Streep plays the role of Clarissa Vaughn; she is immediately inspired by Clarissa Dalloway, who doubts her life choices. Although the constructions and references may seem complex, The Hours apparently brings forward a simple, deep humanity.
