Carlotta Bailly-Borg

The artistic practice of Carlotta Bailly-Borg is constructed across various mediums, devoid of hierarchy, encompassing drawing, canvas painting, ceramics, frescoes, and glass painting. Carlotta Bailly-Borg interweaves and contaminates diverse references to forge a novel pictorial and fictional space. The anthropomorphic figures she portrays inhabit distinct scenes, attempting to find their place in relation to one another. These unconventional characters embody a frenetic energy bordering on hyperactivity, drawing inspiration from a visual culture enriched by the accumulation of sources like Greek and Hindu mythology, medieval manuscripts, Japanese erotic representations, etc. Bailly-Borg appropriates these sources by manipulating the chronologies of art history. What ties these diverse influences together is their directness, the efficiency of line and curve, their timeless quality, and the exploration of physical love.

Carlotta Bailly-Borg, born in France in 1984, currently lives and works in Brussels. She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy in 2010 and had a residency at the Pavillon du Palais de Tokyo between 2012 and 2013.
