Jean Bernard Koeman (b. 1964) is a visual artist, exhibition maker and scenographer. He teaches at the Rietveld Academy and the PhDArts at Leiden University. In addition to his work as a visual artist, Koeman is also involved as a scenographer in the work of Koen Augustijnen (Les Ballets C de la B, Ghent) and Abke Haring (Toneelhuis, Antwerp), among others.
In recent years, Koeman has built installations and architectural integrations in museums and art institutions in Iceland, Kosovo, Finland, China, Albania, South Korea, Turkey, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium. The installations have their origins in language and architecture. Koeman finds his energy and inspiration in the legacy of modernism, literature, art history and current social questions. He indicates the starting points of his work with self-appointed notions such as ‘Genuine Fiction’, ‘Syncopated Structures’, ‘Eloquent Parcours’ and ‘Mental Architecture’.
