Fernando Marques Penteado in Aalst

The artist in dialogue with the legend of Saint Martin, the beggar, and the cloak

We invited Brazilian artist Fernando Marques Penteado to come and discover the rich textile history of Aalst at his own pace and rhythm. Intrigued, the artist quickly became captivated by the life of Saint Martin and immersed himself in the legend of the patron saint and the beggar. The legend tells of Martin’s compassionate act when he encountered a shivering beggar. He divided his coat into two parts and gave one to the poor man. This selfless gesture symbolises Saint Martin’s dedication to charity and concern for the poor.
