Goodbye Julia (Arabic: وداعاً جوليا; Wadāʻan Jūlyā) is a Sudanese film written and directed by Mohamed Kordofani. It is Kordofani’s first feature film and the first film from Sudan ever to be screened in the Un certain regard section of the Cannes Film Festival.
North Sudanese Mona is plagued by guilt after she covers up a murder. She tries to clear her conscience by taking in the deceased’s South Sudanese widow Julia and her son Daniel. Unable to confess her misdeeds to Julia, Mona decides to leave the past behind. However, unrest in the country causes her to come face to face with her sins after all.
Besides a personal drama, Goodbye Julia tells the story of two women who represent the complicated relationships and differences between North and South Sudanese communities. The story is set in Khartoum during Sudan’s final years as a united country, shortly before its secession from South Sudan in 2011.
