Memory

Michel Franco

Memory, Michel Franco’s (After Lucia) latest film, is a moving drama about childhood dementia and trauma, with powerful performances by Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard. The film follows Sylvia, a woman struggling with childhood trauma, and Saul, a man with juvenile dementia. Despite their personal pain and an awkward first meeting, they develop an unexpected and healing bond. The story is not only a film about young dementia, but also a compassionate portrait of two people healing each other. Through their special relationship, they become the band-aid on each other’s wounds.

With Memory, Franco shows a softer, more humane side to his directorial style, without the nihilism that often characterised his earlier work. The result is a tender, moving film that explores themes of loss, forgiveness and connection.
